Luonnonvarainen tummatulikukka on hauska kasvi: se kylväytyy mitä ihmeellisimpiin, yleensä kuiviin paikkoihin. Annan sen hyvänä perhos- ja pörriäiskasvina kasvaa ja heittelen loppukesästä siemenet sinne tänne ilman sen kummempia operaatioita. Tummatulikukka kasvaa 50–150 cm korkeaksi ja kukkii Suomessa heinä–syyskuussa. Laji voi risteytyä ukontulikukan ja purppuratulikukan kanssa. Risteymä ukontulikukan kanssa (Verbascum× semialbum) on melko yleinen.

Verbascum nigrum - the black mullein or dark mullein, is a species of biennial or short-lived perennial herbaceous plants in the genus Verbascum (mullein), native to dry open sites in Europe and the Mediterranean region. It grows to 0.5–1.5 m (1.6–4.9 ft). It may crossbreed with V. phoeniceum and V. thapsus. The cross with the latter (Verbascum× semialbum) is pretty common.
I find this a joyful plant that self sows in odd places. It attracts butterflies and bees - so I let it grow. What is your relation to wild plants, do you let them grow and bloom or do you weed them off?
