My June in Collage

June has offered both joy & troubles.
The greatest joy was my visit to The Haaga Rhododendron Park in Helsinki.
I enjoyed the blooming of Hurdal rose & Meconopsis betonicifolia too.
...
The only trouble was my foot injury, operation and cast. The cast shall stay till the end of July.
It's going to be a long way to recovery and shall define my future months.
But I'll try to keep my spirits up and fingers crossed!

I am a literature blogger as well, so I always read a lot - no matter of the season.

BEST BOOKS OF JUNE
Finnish: Marisha Rasi-Koskinen - About Getting Lost & Forgetting (2017)
Foreign: Kätlin Kaldmaa (Estonian) - Tere Are No Butterflies in Iceland (2017)
Poetry: Lassi Hyvärinen - The Cat and The Wind (2018)

Wishing you sunny days & butterflies in July!

My May in Collage

The whole May has been absolutely wonderful for the summer came over night! Weeks and weeks of hot & sunny weather without rain. We call this a Finnish heat wave with nearly 30 C. The whole Finland has been excited! It has been a phenomenal month floralwise too: abundantly blooming cherries & apple trees and scent of lilacs ❤︎ You'll find posts about apple blossoms and lilacs in the May archive if you are interested.  My days have been spent outside from morning till night, doing this and that in the garden but also relaxing & reading on the terrace. This has been real happiness because last summer was chilly & rainy. I wish a good rain one of these days, preferably during night time  and then sun again! So I'll share with you Gardener's Prayer by Karel Capek - first in Finnish, followed in English.

PUUTARHURIN RUKOUS
Hyvä Jumala,
anna armostasi sadetta joka päivä
jos vain sopii, keskiyöstä kello kolmeen,
ja kuten tiedät, hyvin hienoa ja lämmintä,
jotta se hyvin imeytyy maahan.
Ja anna auringon paistaa koko päivän,
vaikka ei tietenkään liikaa, eikä
Astilben, Gentianan, Hostan
eikä Rhododendronin päälle.
Mutta varjele sateelta Silene, Alysseum,
Helianthemum, laventeli ja muut,
jotka kuten äärettömässä viisaudessasi tiedät,
pitävät kuivuudesta, ja joiden nimet
voin kirjoittaa paperille, jos niin tahdot.
Ja anna aina paljon kastetta ja vähän tuulta,
runsaasti kastematoja, mutta ei etanoita
eikä lehtitäitä eikä härmätauteja
Ja jos sopii, anna kerran viikossa
sataa lannoiteliuosta.
Amen.

GARDENER'S PRAYER
O Lord, grant that in some way
it may rain every day,
Say from about midnight until three o'clock
in the morning,
But, You see, it must be gentle and warm
so that it can soak in;
Grant that at the same time it would not rain on
campion, alyssum, helianthus, lavendar, and others which
You in Your infinite wisdom know
are drought-loving plants -
I will write their names on a bit of paper
if you like -
And grant that the sun may shine
the whole day long,
But not everywhere (not, for instance, on the
gentian, plantain lily, and rhododendron)
and not too much;
That there may be plenty of dew and little wind,
enough worms, no lice and snails, or mildew,
and that once a week thin liquid manure and guano
may fall from heaven.
Amen.

My April in Collage

The winter was exhausting and the spring was late. Now we land finally to May.
The last days of April offered a mix: sunny days, but also cool misty mornings & rain.
But slowly the nature awakens: crocus are in full bloom, scillas and primulas are starting...

The hope of a warm & sunny summer is strong and birds are singing like never before.
It has been a joy to work outdoors and see new growth bursting.
All raking done - my garden is ready for summer - and so am I!

My February in a Nutshell

The Finnish February has offered a lot of freezing weather -
yet fantastic bright & beautiful days & winter sun.

I have posted 18 posts, mainly snow photos & also photos of my tours searching for green.
I visited many florists', garden centres and the Winter Garden of the City of Helsinki.
And of course participated to Aino's color collage challenges - it is so fun.
And I have read a lot.

My best February books were these:

Finnish: Dragsvik telling about red prisoners in 1918
Foreign: A wonderful love story by the Japanese Hiromi Kawakami
Poetry: The ABC of love by the Estonian Kätlin Kaldmaa

Wishing you a good start to March!

January in Collage

In January I photographed mainly tulips & snow - of which
we have had plenty of. The days have been pretty grey...
Let's hope the sun reappears now that February is starting.

The life has run its smooth course. The most striking happening was maybe
There he / she was again yesterday, but too far for me to photograph.
I'll publish anyway this bad photo taken through a dirty window as an evidence :)

- this is as green as it can get here in January!

Wishing you a good start to February!

Memories from 2017

TO BEGIN WITH A WARNING: THIS IS A LONG POST!

Weatherwise December offered it all:
heavy snow falls & beautiful Winter Wonderland, to be followed with melting snow & darkness.
Finland celebrated its 100th Day of Independence and many in my family their birthdays.

November brought the first snow and Christmas decorations into the house.
The pupils of the nearby elementary school created this impressive piece of art.

In October the scenery turned into frosty reds and yellows,
and the autumn leaves started to fall.
I attended The Helsinki Book Fair for four days and enjoyed very much!

In September  I went to see my son's Bernese Mountain Dog Coconut's puppies!
They were really cute, and my grandson handsome.

At he end of September I visited Barcelona. Five days there were gorgeous!

August brought cherries and strong colors into the garden.
The most spectacular blooms were dark & red Alcea rosea!

As a whole the summer 2017 was chilly and rainy. Everything bloomed later than normally.
But they bloomed anyhow - July was filled with blooms & delicious strawberries!

My granddaughter Helmi got her white student cap. The party at the beginning of
June was lovely and I very proud. Roses started to bloom.

In May the perennials started to grow; tulips were in bloom...
And I succeeded for once to take a photo of the squirrels that visit my garden.

In April we celebrated Easter and Pineapple paid a few days' visit.

In March some early signs of spring could be seen, the days grew longer
and we had also sunny days.

If I remember correctly, February was a pretty dull month.
But we had these delicious & traditional Runeberg pastries!

January & New Year started cold and snowy.
There were frost flowers at my kitchen window.

What might the year 2018 bring? Hopefully health & nice memories!

Wishing you all Happy New Year!
