Floral Bliss #76

I paid a visit to Rhododendron Park in Haaga, Helsinki. The link tells widely about
this stunning park with 8 hectares dedicated to rhododendrons and azaleas.
Founded in the 1970's the area has been a research garden for the University of Helsinki’s
plant breeding programme. I.a. these varieties have found their way to the market:
‘Haaga’, ‘Helsinki University’, ‘St. Michel’, ‘P.M.A. Tigerstedt’, ‘Axel Tigerstedt’,
‘Pekka’, ‘Eino’ and ‘Mauritz’.

Haagan Alppiruusupuisto on kerrassaan upea 8 hehtaarin puisto,
joka on omistettu alppiruusuille ja azaleoille.
1970-luvulla perustettu puisto on toiminut Helsingin yliopiston kasvinjalostuksen koealueena
ja sieltä myyntiin ovat päässeet mm.’Haaga’, ’Helsinki University’, ’St. Michel’,
’P.M.A. Tigerstedt’, ’Axel Tigerstedt’, ’Pekka’, ’Eino’ ja ’Mauritz’.

St Michel / my garden 2017
The timing of my visit was not perfect. I should have gone a week ago
but still especially azaleas looked charming and their scent was wonderful.
As to rhododendrons mainly whites were still in bloom and I suppose they were 'St. Michel'.
I did not get close enough so I added a few photos from my 'St. Michel'.

St. Michel's buds are pink, then the flower fades into white / My garden 2017

I'll save the gorgeous azaleas for another post. - Ihanat tuoksuvat azaleat jätän toiseen kertaan.

Floral Bliss #70

Foto: Public domain
This week's Floral Bliss is posted already today for I want to wish you Happy May Day!

We don't have many carnival days in Finland, but the 1st of May surely is one of them.
We call these two day celebrations by the name Vappu.
Young and old put their student caps on, kids have colourful balloons,
people camp in parks and drink champagne or some heavier stuff and chorus are singing.

The famous statue in the first photo is situated near the market place in the centre of Helsinki
and is called Havis Amanda.
It is designed by the sculptor Ville Vallgren and since 1908 the statue has delighted
both citizens of Helsinki as well as tourists.
At 6 o'clock pm on the 30th of April students put a huge white student cap on her head.
Usually there is a big & loud audience. I'm too old for these crowds and prefer to stay at home.

Last year I made this collage to the Color Collage Challenge.
It seems that we got some new snow near Vappu last year - I had totally forgotten!
Colors of Vappu - showing also my husband's student cap.
The pompom in his cap means that he was a student of technology, I studied marketing - no pompom.

I connect red roses to the political celebrations of the 1st of May.
In my garden Rosa rugosa 'Rotes Meer' is most close to red,
so I chose a cut red rose from March 2017 & another from my garden.

I just have to add this lovely Spring Banner that my friend Milli made for my book blog.

This week's Makrotex Challenge is STRIPES. Some views of
The Winter Garden of The City of Helsinki

On the horizon you can see the very centre of Helsinki.
The big white area is The Gulf of Töölö, now covered with ice and snow.

Cacti Weekend

Echinocactus grusonii
Mother-in-law's cushion - Schwiegermutterstuhl - Anopinjakkara
Lately I have published only blue & white winter photos - so I just had to go through my archives. I have forgotten to show you these cacti photos that I took at the Winter Garden of the City of Helsinki - so here we go!

I don't know the names of all of them. But there were cacti, aloes and agaves, all very nicely displayed. I'll number the photos, so if somebody knows their names, please tell me.

Happy Green Weekend!

Searching for Green 2

The Winter Garden of the City of Helsinki is a gorgeous conservatory of cast-iron and glass. It's structure was designed by Gustaf Nyström and the aim was to mimic the architecture of The Crystal Palace in London that was built for the Great Exhibition of 1851. Our Finnish crystal palace was opened to the public a bit later, in 1893. The entrance has been free since the beginning. The Winter Garden in Helsinki has approximately 200 different exotic species. It was a grey day outside, but inside a fascinating tropic.

Helsingin kaupungin Talvipuutarha on ihana vihreä keidas keskellä talvea.

Wishing you sunny days & Happy Valentine's Day!
